In 2018, WVPS embarked on a school wide Sustainability/STEM unit culminating in an upcycling competition. Our students became deeply aware of environmental sustainability issues through integrated lessons within each year level. This ignited passion to help create change in many of our students.
Upcycling is a creative form of recycling where you take a used product that you no longer have a use for and turn it into something different. Our very first Sustainability/STEM upcycling competition was held in term 3. The quality of entries from all year levels demonstrated this increasing enthusiasm and depth of knowledge. Winners were very difficult to pick and the innovative ideas shared between students was the most powerful aspect of the process.
STEM promotes critical thinking and problem solving. Integrated/STEM activities help our students envisage a better future by approaching future waste management challenges with creativity. Scientific and mathematical thinking promote realistic and thoughtful waste management solutions.
We protect our environment by keeping our outdoor areas free from rubbish. A whole school policy to eat inside helps keep our play areas clean. We are proud of our litter free yard and enjoy playing in a calming and natural environment at lunch and recess. In addition we manage our weeds through the use of organic, chemical-free solutions. We are conscious of maintaining the health of our students, staff and wild-life.
